Barbara Cleary the winner of the 2014 Flora Women’s Mini Marathon crossed the line in 34 minutes, 7 seconds. I would like to say we were not too far behind her but I think that might lead to uncontrollable laughter and some disbelief. However I can say we took it in our stride and while our stride was nowhere near Barbara’s time we did have fun along the route. We even had time to stop, have a quick debate and be redirected to go under the flyover bridge at UCD rather than get stuck at the water stop on the slip road.

We had a bit of healthy competition between the six of us but agreed as we were heading up to Fitzwilliam Place to join hands and cross over the finish line together. Little did we know we’d have to queue for our medals, still it was worth it and tucking into coffee, tea, muffins and carrot cake later in a little cafe on Merrion Row; we were very content with our achievement and still full of chat about the day.

It is wonderful to see so many women making a difference to charities across Ireland and abroad. Having taken this year’s mini marathon at a slower place it was nice to read the t-shirts displaying the chosen charity of each individual. Our yellow t-shirts were our beacon to keep a watch for each other in the thickening crowds. The fact that so many other charities had chosen a similar yellow only added to that challenge!

Congratulations to my sister Annette and her very welcoming colleagues Mary, Claire, Catherine and Michelle from Lifeline Ambulance Service. Thank you all for the lovely warm welcome and including me in your little group. To my colleagues in the Library, NUI Maynooth a huge thanks once again for your very generous support in helping to raise money for our chosen charity BUMBLEance.

I have a renewed appreciation for authors and magazine or newspaper columnist who have to write each week on a particular topic. I mean I love walking but I’m struggling here to say much for today’s post so I have chosen to look back at some of our other activities over the last four years in WOW. We began as I mentioned before as a result of a Bright Ideas campaign in 2010 and despite members of the group retiring over the years, several members of the group have stayed constant. Even some of those who retired continue to drop in for walks, when they manage to free some time in their packed schedules and people think working is full time! Still we are always pleased to see them and appreciate getting to continue our friendship with them in this easy way.

So who remembers the Walk in my Shoes campaign in April 2012 and all the concerns about walking in odd shoes? We quickly allayed these concerns explaining that the idea is to show you care about mental health and to help raise money to assist with the provision of FREE mental health services for young adults across Ireland. As it happens the day we picked for our campaign was probably the wettest one on record, so in our odd shoes we had a very funny, very enjoyable session making use of the Irish Heart Foundation Desk Work-out and we raised €85.00 in the process.

Some of our more recent activities were in October 2013 Library staff participated in the 5K that raised €600 for Trocaire’s work for the Syrian refugees. Later that year we had some more fun with the Maynooth Christmas Fun Run which includes staff and students on campus. The proceeds go to St. Vincent de Paul and the library’s contribution was €153.00 to this worthy charity.

My colleagues in the library have been extremely generous every year that I have participated in the Dublin Simon Fun Run and the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon. In 2011 we raised €105.00 for the Irish Cancer Society / Action Breast Cancer programme. In 2012 we supported St. Patrick’s Hospital Foundation, also in 2012 and 2013 we raised €85 and €125 respectively for Dublin Simon.

We have also supported various other charities over the years some I have mentioned in a previous post. One staff member Michael has completed the Galway Cycle on several occasions for charity. Another member of staff Ciara is a volunteer helping people who are sick travel to Lourdes. I can’t mention everyone here but I know we are all active in many ways helping people less fortunate than ourselves. Some people of course are more vocal about it than others, so this is probably a good opportunity to say what a generous bunch of people you all are.

This year I hope to complete the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon with my sister Annette and her work colleagues from Lifeline Ambulance Service. We hope to raise money for BUMBLEance and the Saoirse Foundation and I will no doubt be calling on my colleagues again for support so please don’t feel this post is just to butter you up for more sponsorship! Honestly it is just a reminder of all we have done but obvioulsy I’ll still be very happy to raise as much money as I can for this charity. This YouTube clip will give you some idea of how this service is helping children and their families across Ireland.

Now back to the subject of walking, while contemplating this post I came across a really interesting article “Why a walking workout is good for your body.” Please take some time to read this as it is very relevant particularly for those with health concerns. Happy walking.

Well it’s Wednesday again, hope if you are a regular to this blog you managed to get out for a walk at some stage over the last week. If not don’t fret over it just try again this week. Perhaps this YouTube clip Get Ireland Walking from the Get Ireland Walking initiative might help to get you started.
My feet were itching to walk as I viewed it at the weekend. I like that it is ordinary people talking about their experience of joining walking groups and the benefits they get from walking. Don’t worry the clip is only just over three minutes long so you don’t need to allow too much time to watch. You can have your comfortable shoes on you in split second time after watching and just go with the momentum.

Why not check out some walking clubs that might be in your area?

Lastly if groups are just not your thing don’t be discouraged, there is no penalties for walking solo just remember these safety tips from the HSE.
Happy walking.

Our WOW Group in the library at NUI Maynooth was officially four years old last Thursday 24th April, 2014. The day passed unnoticed so it was especially interesting and timely at the weekend when my colleague Marie alerted me to the following article about walking. May Wong writes in Stanford News/Stanford Report, April 24th, 2014 about discoveries made by Stanford researchers linking walking and creativity.

“Stanford researchers found that walking boosts creative inspiration. They examined creativity levels of people while they walked versus while they sat. A person’s creative output increased by an average of 60 percent when walking.” (Wong, 2014)

The article reminded me of a comment my colleague Della made in a previous Walk on Wednesday post when she said:

“All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” (Della, 2014)

The article certainly reiterates this sentiment. It is makes for interesting reading and it surely would inspire you to keep walking. The full study is published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition and is available as a PDF if you wish to read it.
So back to our experience here in the library, we have the added benefit of having a ready-made peaceful walking trail on our doorstep, as you can see from the photo included in this post. We definitely return to work after our walks in better form and feeling glad that we ventured out, regardless of the unpredictable Irish weather. On reflection we only had to walk in snow once during the four years so that’s not a bad record! So finally just to wish my follow walkers a belated Happy Birthday, looking forward to our walk today and here’s to many happy and creative walks over the next few years.

The challenge after returning to work following a bank holiday weekend is to remember that you started the working week on Tuesday so Wednesday has come around a lot quicker than expected. Check out some of the walks the walking group in the library in NUI Maynooth have participated in over the past few years. The Liz McDonnell 5K Cross Country Run.
Don’t panic you don’t have to run necessarily. You can walk this 5K while enjoying the beautiful grounds of Castletown House all the while feeling really good about the fact that you are walking for such a worthwhile charity as ARC Cancer Care Support Ireland. Details for the 2014 5K are not yet available but we hope to support it again this year.
Interestingly the NUI Maynooth Archive and Research Centre is located on the second floor of Castletown House in Celbridge, Co. Kildare.
This facility marks an exciting new collaboration between the Office of Public Works and the National University of Ireland Maynooth.
Sorry I digress, so back to the subject of walking and our experience here in the library, the Maynooth 10K offered a great opportunity to challenge ourselves. Once again relax you can walk this one too! Some of the course includes the wonderful grounds of Carton House. Who knows you may even spot a well know golfer or rugby player as you stride through this pretty stretch of Maynooth. It is not too late to register if you want to take part in the Maynooth 10K.

All proceeds will go towards the development of all-weather facilities on Moyglare Road in conjunction with Maynooth GAA.

Best of luck to all those taking part in this year’s event. Happy walking or perhaps more appropriately for this particular walk happy celebrity spotting. Enjoy.

Walk on Wednesdays

Well it’s Wednesday again and we are looking forward to another walk at lunch time in the April sunshine here in the beautiful grounds of St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

So are you considering the benefits of walking but still sitting on the fence about actually getting started? Here in the library in NUI Maynooth we found wearing a pedometer helped to keep us really motivated during the step challenge. Check out this interesting article about one of the benefits of wearing a pedometer. It might help inspire you to get started.
We are really lucky here in Maynooth with lovely campus grounds and we have also walked along the Royal Canal so why not check out your area for some nice places to walk. Happy walking!

Walk on Wednesdays

So you made a New Year resolution back in January to get fitter. How is that going for you? Well done if you have managed to keep up with your new fitness routine but if like many others you have struggled with it, why not consider setting up a walking club in your library. As a result of a Bright Ideas campaign the staff in the library in NUI Maynooth set up a walking club. We had our inaugural walk at lunch time on 24th April 2010 and we have continued to meet to walk each Wednesday at lunch time. This means that at least once a week we are guaranteed some exercise and we have the added benefit of enjoying the beautiful grounds here on campus and catching up with work colleagues in an informal setting.

We have participated in the Irish Heart Foundation Step Challenge. Details about our experience with the challenge are listed in the step challenge event poster: Step Challenges in the Library at NUI Maynooth presented at the NUI Maynooth Teaching and Learning Showcase 2013. As today is Wednesday we will be walking as usual and it’s a lovely day here in Maynooth. If you would like more details about our walking club just contact me. A club is easy to establish, it fits into your working day and it does not cost you money!
